Deviation Actions
I have to tread carefully here. This might count as an artist-bashing journal entry, but I kind of need to let this out of my system, so I'll try to make it apply to the community as a whole.
I posted a comment in which I pointed out two flaws in a deviant's o.c. deviation (there was no punctuation in the entire paragraph, and parents generally need stronger, or at least more complex, motivations for abandoning their kids than "they thought he was evil").
Then I got this lovely reply:
"can't you people just leave me alone about my writhing and mind your own business ? and stop being so rude about it ? you don't see me going around criticizing people do you ? NO cuz i know they will just get upset its not that hard for you to stop going around being like that so please don't reply and let me be ?"
And then I was banned, and both my comments and her comments were "flagged as spam" And skimming through her comments page, it's not just a one time thing. She pretty much closes any comment that say anything less than flattering about her.
Okay. Deviantart at it's best uses the scientific method to help advance humanities' ability to express itself. You create something, then submit it to the entire artistic community as a whole for approval. They then show you problems you may not have seen, thus helping you to avoid such mistakes in the future. You become a better artist, thus enabling you to help others becomes better artists. Everyone benefits.
If you post it on Deviantart, you are in essence saying that you want an outsider's perspective on your work, for good or bad. The problem is that many people don't believe that. They believe the internet was created so that they can sit around listening to others tell them that their s*** doesn't stink.
Seriously, if you're eighteen and you can't take any sort of criticism by this point, well, you better start learning. NOW. You are an adult. You can't be this thin-skinned. The longer you pretend that problems don't exist if you cover your ears and close your eyes, the harder it will be to start learning. Now, I'm not exactly Mr. Maturity. In fact, I learned this particular lesson three years later than I should have. But hey, I guess the knowledge that someone out there is older than me, but still hasn't learned it is a bit morale-boosting.

YO WRITERS
Stop what you’re doing right now and go write 3 sentences of your story.
Every time you see this, write 3 lines.
Reblog so other writers will do the same. Let’s finish these damn stories.
(Originally from http://vigaishere.tumblr.com/post/109450336692/yo-writers . But I don't have a tumblr account, so I'm rebloging here.)
Odds 'n Ends
This morning I woke up with a splitting headache and deep sense of regret.
I immediately thought "What the hell did I do last night?"
Then I thought “Oh, that’s right. For some reason I signed up for a chemistry lab that begins at 8 pm and ends at 11:30 pm.”
Assorted musings on beginning my fourth semester:
1) My 5k running time has dropped by a full minute since I started having to carry these 900+ page books everywhere.
2) Ye gods, It feels amazing not having to spend 45 minutes stuck in traffic this semester.
3) I started giggling during the chem safety video that showed fake blood spurting everywhere after a glass
The Meaning of Valentine's Day
On the subject of international "People Bitching about Loneliness" day, here's something one of my friends said about people in general, and probably one of the most important things I've heard in my life- "If you want to learn to live with other people, you've first got to learn to live with yourself."
So if you celebrate valentines day by complaining about how lonely you are, it sends the impression that you are so unreasonably boring that even you don't want to spend time with yourself. Seriously, celebrate today by going out and do something nice for someone, for God's sake! Yes, even if you don't want to sleep with them. After all, you'
Polishing Up Protagonists
Here it is, the essay on writing detective fiction written by someone who has never even written a detective story! It's a bit scattered right now, so if you have any advice for improving it, let me know.
Suppose you want to write a detective. Only you realize that there are a LOT of stories about detectives. Now you’re faced with the problem of making your detective look so distinct from the crowd of detectives that anyone who has read a bunch of detective stories will be able to pick your detective out from a crowd based on a single page of your story. Well, there’s no easy solution. But there are a lot of tricks you can us
